A three-year program covering the full breadth of psychotherapy training in Marriage & Family Therapy.

This type of psychotherapy views the whole family and all of its individual members as a fluid system of interactions. It teaches that change in one part of the family affects the rest of the family system.

Marriage & Family Therapy offers a wide range of possible interventions for individuals, couples and families:
  • use of talk therapy to explore personal issues
  • interactive therapy such as role plays, writing, drawing
  • whole family therapy, using the genogram (family tree) to view patterns of behaviors & culture from generation to generation.

Medical Education:
Post- specialty Fellowship: Family Systems Medicine

University of Rochester, School of Medicine

Department of Family Medicine

Family Systems Medicine is a two-year fellowship for physicians who have already completed a medical specialty.  Fellows receive training in the Bio-Psycho-Social model of medical care, while also teaching these skills to other physicians for use in every day practice.

The word Bio-Psycho-Social was coined by George Engel, M.D., a Rochester physician whose ground-breaking work in the field of illness and human relationships is still studied and practiced in the medical curriculum of many universities today.

The BPS model focuses on improving physician-patient relationships through enhanced communication, interviewing and empathy skills  to approach the patient at their comfort level (patient-focused care).

Attention is given not only to patient needs, but to the larger sphere of life surrounding the patient (family, other relationships, job), all of which influence healing from illness.
